Looking Forward

Turning Tragedy into Triumph
For many generations before this century the standard procedure for developing skilled craftsmen was for the father to teach the sons his trade. The skills necessary for the craft were passed from one generation to another. Many years ago a shoemaker was teaching his 9-year-old son his craft to prepare him for life. One day, an awl fell from the shoemaker’s table and tragically put out the eye of his son. Without the medical knowledge and expertise of today, the son ended up losing not only that eye, but the other one as well.

His father put him in a special school for people without sight. At that time they were taught to read by using large carved wooden blocks. The blocks were clumsy, awkward to handle, and required a considerable amount of time to learn. The shoemaker’s son, however, was not content only to learn to read. He knew there must be an easier, better way. Over the years, he devised a new reading system for people who were blind by punching dots into paper. To accomplish his objective, the shoemaker’s son used the same awl that had blinded him. His name was Louis Braille.

The saying is still true: It’s not what happens to you; it’s how you handle what happens to you that count. I believe you will agree that attitude will propel you farther than bemoaning unfortunate incidents in your life. If the outlook is not good, try the uplook. It’s always good.

Motivation, Manipulation and Leadership
The word motivation is often confused with manipulation. Motivation occurs when you persuade others to take an action in their own best interests. Things such as people preparing their homework, accepting responsibility for their performance, and finishing their education are the results of motivation. Manipulation is persuading others to take an action that is primarily for your benefit. Things such as selling an interior product at an inflated price and working people overtime with no extra pay are examples of manipulation.

Manipulation self-destructs the individual doing the manipulating. Word gets out on manipulators, and people grow less and less likely to respond in a positive manner to their manipulation. Productivity declines. Leadership occurs when you persuade a person to take action that is in your mutual best interests. Dwight Eisenhower said that leadership was the ability to persuade someone to do what you wanted him to do because he wanted to do it. When that happens, performance improves, productivity increases, and both parties win.

Comparing motivation to manipulation is like comparing kindness to deceit. The difference is the intent of the person. Motivation will cause people to act out of free choice and desire, while manipulation often results in forced compliance. One is ethical and long lasting; the other is unethical and temporary.

Conviction Is The Key
One person with a conviction would do more than a hundred who only had an interest. Commitment is the key to staying the course and completing the project. Conviction always precedes commitment.

When you are convinced as a salesperson that you are selling a marvelous product, your demeanor, body language, voice inflection, and facial expressions communicate to the prospect that you fervently believe you are offering something of value. Many times the prospect will buy, not because of her belief in the product, goods, or service, but because of the belief of the salesperson in the product being offered.

Our feelings are transferable. Courage can be and frequently is transferred to the other person. Convictions are the same. The teacher who fervently believes in the message he delivers will persuade the student by the very depth of that conviction. Many people have gone a lot farther than they thought they could because someone else thought they could. In short, their confidence, born of someone else’s conviction, had enabled them to make it. Conviction comes from knowledge and a feeling that what we are teaching, doing, or selling is absolutely right. When we transfer that conviction to those within our sphere of influence, they and society benefit.

Show me a person with deep convictions and I will show you a person who has made a commitment to deliver those convictions to others. Show me a great leader and I will show you a person of deep convictions who is able to attract followers because of those convictions. I will also show you a person who is happy in what she is doing and far more successful than people who do not have those convictions. Buy that idea, develop those convictions, and make that commitment.
